Fly tying is my passion. I am a proud award-winning and published tier with my own tying techniques and original designs. I can tie anything from a size 8/0 saltwater baitfish fly to a size 28 dry fly for brook trout.
I’ve been tying flies for over 50 years. I began tying at the age of 10, when my mentor from Big Brothers Canada introduced me to fly fishing and the art of fly tying. I was instantly captivated by what I was able to create with some string and feathers. I was hooked, to say the least.
As a late teenager, I would bring my flies to local tackle shops to show the owners. Some shops bought my flies, others did not. I was incentivized to do better by the shops that wouldn’t buy my flies.
In the late 1990s, I became solely affiliated with Grindstone Angling in Waterdown, Ontario. I tied for custom orders and taught beginner fly tying courses for the shop. I also represented Grindstone at various fly fishing, outdoors and sportsmanship shows throughout Ontario and Michigan, including presenting my skills at the Southfield Fly Fishing Show in Detroit for 10 years.
During the early 2000s, I became senior pro staff at First Cast Fly Fishing Shop in Guelph, Ontario. I tied custom orders, including boutonnieres of fully dressed Atlantic salmon flies, and I taught beginner, intermediate and advanced fly-tying courses.
Though I am self-taught, I was influenced by the late Blair Thompson of Prince Edward Island. I found his flies to be extraordinary and seeing him tie gave me the desire to improve my own work. Furthermore, I did workshops with renowned Atlantic salmon tires Rick Whorwood, Mike Martinek, Bob Veverka and Mike Radenchich.
I’m an avid steelhead fisherman, having fished the Niagara river, Saugeen, Grand and other tributaries in southern Ontario for over 30 years. I developed my own patterns for these rivers over the years, especially the Niagara River –probably one of the toughest rivers to fish from shore. My favorite flies for the Niagara are smelt, shiner and leech fly patterns especially in the early winter and right into the spring. In the fall, egg patterns dominate because of the spawning salmon coming in from Lake Ontario. Some of my Niagara flies include Niagara Smelt, Niagara Shiner (a new revised version) and Joe’s Leech (published).
I’m also an avid brook trout fisherman especially on the Nipigon River, where the world record was caught. The chances of landing a brook trout over five pounds is quite good. My personal best, from the Nipigon is 7 pounds. The bait fish flies that I use in the Niagara River work just as well in the Nipigon River.
I also enjoy fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the summertime, wading along the shoreline of Lake Erie. I find stealth tactics really rewarding. The water at that time of the year can be very clear, making the bass spook easily, so I designed realistic looking flies like bait fish, leech and crayfish flies that easily blend into the natural surroundings.
